Matt's Cover Process For 2000ad Prog 1984

Posted on

After I submitted my design for BLOCK WAR, a poster for Vice Press, 2000AD came back and asked if I would be interested in doing a cover for an upcoming prog. Tharg mentioned it would be prog 1984 and suggested Orwell as a jumping off point.
I instantly came up with the thought of doing something that would play on the classic "Big Brother is Watching You" propaganda posters. 2000ad thought it would be cool if I did that but also set the whole thing within a cityscape similar to
my BLOCK WAR poster.
I then thought it would be a good gag if Judge Dredd was pointing at a piece of propaganda with his own mug shot on, that mirrored his face exactly while looking straight back at us, the reader, as if to say "Watch you step citizen.". I used some of the background elements from my previous poster as I wanted it to be outside the Halls Of Justice again (I just love the design for that building) and also to share a similar style, then quickly roughed up a mock and sent through for approval. The only addition I had to make was add a perp that Judge Dredd has just shot, which I thought would be fun to do as a self portrait based on photo reference.
Now I just had to bring it altogether. I wanted to, as much as possible, ink this piece like it was a panel from a comic and used the styles of classic artists like Cliff Robinson as a jumping off point and then adding my own rougher inked style to the mix. The final stage was colouring and shading. I ended up throwing out the all red approach as I really wanted the propaganda billboard to pop more and draw the eye, so I went with a simple two tone muted colour pallete apart from the flashes of red.

New Judge Dredd 2000 AD Screen Print - Block War by Matt Ferguson

Posted on

Vice Press, under license from Rebellion, is proud to announce the next releases in our officially licensed line of limited edition 2000 AD art prints.

This next exciting new release has been lovingly produced by Vice Press co-founder Matt Ferguson and features 2000 AD’s lawman of the future, Judge Dredd.

Block War by Matt Ferguson will debut at our booth at the Manchester Film and Comic Con on May the 21st and 22nd and will be released online at 6pm BST on Wednesday the 25th of May exclusively at www.Vice-Press.com.

Here is what artist Matt Ferguson had to say about working on this piece:

"One of my favourite old school Judge Dredd stories has always been Block Mania, it's a story that really shows the day to day workings of a street level Judge and that was my jumping off point for this print. I wanted something graphic and exciting so I limited myself to just 2 colours and went from there. It's always cool to see Dredd on his Lawmaster and I thought why not have him jumping off an overpass to get down to some rioting citizens, as soon as I thought of that element the rest of the print fell in to place pretty quickly."  - Matt Ferguson

As a company focused on producing artwork that celebrates British and European pop culture, the Hammer Horror movies were a series we have been itching to work on since we launched Vice Press. It is an honour to produce a piece that celebrates one of cinema’s most iconic characters as portrayed by one of the most legendary actors of cinema, the late Sir Christopher Lee. When it came to choosing an artist to work on the project, there was no doubt that Francesco Francavilla was the artist we wanted. Francesco’s art perfectly matches the character and subject and captures the spirit of the classic 60s illustrated movie posters.

"I grew up with horror movies and even before I was watching Argento & Italian horror, I was binging on the classic Universal Monsters movies and the 60s/70s bloody colorful Hammer movies. Karloff, Lugosi, Lee, Cushing, were all childhood friends of mine so needless to say I was ecstatic when Vice Press asked me to do a Hammer Dracula poster - been wanting to do that for ages. Hope all the love I have for Hammer and Christopher Lee shows."
